About the Milky Way Fandom

Image from George Hall's recording of the Jupiter asteroid impact on September 10, 2012.
last update: Sept. 21, 2024The Milky Way Fandom, or the MWF for short, is a fandom inspired and dedicated to creating personified characters of the planets, stars, and moons, amongst other celestial objects.Although the MWF is predated by fandoms like MWGG and Planetary Moe, and has been supplanted by fandoms such as Planethumans, Earth-chan, Planet Master, Solarballs, and Ghostfruits' Nebula in terms of popularity, it's seen recent usage as an umbrella term unifying all these fandoms together, as well as individual artists' own interpretations of space gijinka! The fandom has its origins on Tumblr in September 2012, when the planet Jupiter blocked Earth from a potential asteroid impact. Tumblr users made jokes about the prospect of "shipping" the two planets together, which led to another user, bloggish, creating a short fanfiction about a personified Jupiter protecting Earth. (For posterity, the fanfiction, also known as A Thousand Burns, has since been reuploaded to Archive of Our Own.)Within a week of the fanfiction being uploaded, an entire fandom was created in response, known as the Milky Way Fandom. While Jupitearth remained one of the most popular ships in the fandom's initial boom, several other artists also began to write and illustrate their own interpretations of not only Jupiter and Earth, but dozens of other celestial objects and even create content for other ships, such as Mars/Earth (also known as Marth, or TerMars). The fandom's sudden popularity inspired an article from the Daily Dot, and after the MWF's initial craze died down, multiple artists still continued to create content for the fandom; that is, until activity in the fandom declined for much of the 2010s.While the fandom remained small and relatively stagnant for most of the 2010s (perhaps due to its biggest creators moving on to other projects or because of other fandoms taking its place), there is a current effort to bring the fandom back together and bridge the gap between all space gijinka fandoms!

- Sailor Moon - Magical girl anime/manga franchise, focusing on the guardians of the planets known as Sailor Guardians, sworn to protect the universe. I'm honestly not sure where this stands in terms of personification; the cast is simply described as the guardians of their planets, but whether or not that means they're the actual representations of the planets or simply that they're spiritually connected/guarding their planets, is, uh... not clear.
- The Stars Whisper - LARP where players act as stars asking each other philosophical questions.
